Emotions have historically played an important role in communication. Emotional appeals are central in most of professional communications across industries and purposes. Emotions can be “responsibly” manipulated, altered to achieve communication goals, but they can also simply be voiced out as a way to build resilience. Yet, emotions can also become barriers for effective communication, when, for instance, they inhibit people from understanding and complying with important life-saving recommendations. But how can communication professionals leverage the power of emotions in an ethical manner?

This webinar will present some recent research conducted on the role of emotions in critical situations such as health emergencies, organization-stakeholder conflicts, together with a concrete example from Finland on how emotions have been used to build resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. The speakers will then discuss how communication professionals could use emotions effectively and ethically to achieve different communication purposes and how they could make decision and counsel their leadership in emotion-laden, highly uncertain, and complex conflict situations.
